Public Realm of Downtown Oakville
Oakville, Ontario
Over the past century, there has been a shift in the needs & priorities of public space in Downtown Oakville. In its current state, the Downtown is characterized by significant natural features, heritage, mixed use and compact built form, with concentrated activity along Lakeshore Rd. A detailed analysis has found that the district is a very successful business area and an important anchor in Oakvilleās urban fabric. Its needs and demands are changing though, and the streets and open spaces must continue to evolve.
Our Public Realm Vision builds on the foundation of the Downtown Strategic Action Plan to enhance the existing street network and open spaces, strengthening the identity of Downtown Oakville through high quality urban design. Specifically, a redesign of Lakeshore Rd. and a rethinking of George St. will work to continue the great success of Downtown Oakville. Design Components, such as bike lanes, flexible parking, curb bulb-outs, extensions and pavement types, can also be used to enhance the streets in Downtown. The flexible usage and seasonality of the space increase the enjoyability of the pedestrian realm while enabling continued access by car.
